Dr. Simon Mai and Dr. Nancy Zhu trained and practised as medical doctors in China before specializing in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Dr. Simon Mai is an orthopaedic surgeon from China. He graduated from Zhongshan Medical School with an MD degree in 1983. When practising Western medicine, Dr. Mai incorporated acupuncture techniques, for example acupuncture anaesthesia during and after operations.

He lived in England for seven years, where he had a private acupuncture clinic and was a Clinical Research Fellow at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. To provide more effective treatments to his patients, Dr. Mai also completed a physiotherapy course in England.

He moved to Canada in 1997 and set up China Acupuncture & Herbal Clinic in Port Coquitlam and in Burnaby with his wife, Dr. Nancy Zhu, M.D. Since then he has practised Eastern medicine incorporating Western therapeutic techniques.

Dr. Nancy Zhu is a physician from China and also a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine. From 1982 to 1990 she practised in government hospitals in China, combining her expertise in Western medicine with TCM, for example using acupuncture and her knowledge of herbs to help her patients relieve the side effects of chemotherapy.

In 1991 Dr. Zhu moved to England with her husband, where they set up an acupuncture and TCM clinic. She now practises acupuncture and Chinese medicine at our Port Coquitlam clinic.

In the clinic

Practice and professional activities

Both Dr. Mai and Dr. Zhu have been through high-standard professional medical training, and have more than 20 years of clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. They apply acupuncture, tuina and herbal formulae for internal and external use, and also integrate Chinese massage with Qi, or energy. They use traditional Chinese medical methods to remove blockages of the body’s channels, adjust the balance of the whole body, improve blood circulation, and relieve pain and stress.

Many patients who received these treatments, especially those with problems that were difficult to treat successfully by other healing approaches, found results that they did not think were possible.

The practice is recognized by Veterans Affairs Canada, the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) and many extended health plans. Fees & insurance

Teaching & media

Sharing Chinese medicine with the community

Besides clinical practice, Dr. Mai and Dr. Zhu are instructors at the Western Canadian Institute of TCM Practitioners, and give seminars in the community from time to time. In February 2003, Dr. Mai began speaking weekly on the health program of radio station AM1470. The doctors have also been featured on television news. The purpose of these activities is to educate the public on how to prevent disease and maintain health.
